"Tempted" Episodes 23-24 (cont.) “Thank you for inviting me in,” he murmurs. “How? How can. . . can you be here?” she stammers. “This is my house. You’re not supposed to be able to. . . . ‘’ “I’m able to because you made me strong enough,” Caleb interrupts. “But I haven’t done anything,” she argues.

“Just being with you is enough for now,” he explains. “Until I’m whole again. And the sooner the better. Because I’ve got to tell you this . . . ‘’ [He looks suggestively downward towards his crotch.] “This being a shadow of my former self really bites. But I guess I can’t complain too much, with my plan going so well.” When she asks what plan he’s talking about, he replies, “Well, look around you. The chaos has begun. The mistrust, the suspicion, the doubt—it’s taken on a life of its own.” “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she bluffs, denying her own fears and doubts. “I’m talking about those arrogant fools and them thinking that what they have will last forever, that their so-called love is indestructible,” he sneers. “But it’s not.” “You keep talking about making everybody fall out of love. How can you do that?” she asks. “Let’s just say this . . . I’m getting some help from a friend,” he replies evasively. “Who? Who’s doing this? Who’s helping you?” she inquires angrily.

“No one you know,” he tells her. “It’s disintegrating right before their eyes, Olivia. I’m taking from them what they tried to take from me.” Caleb’s words contain a mixture of truth and lies. Since we know that Livvie is helping him with his plans, his statement that it’s anyone she knows is, of course, a lie. However, since she isn’t consciously aware that she is helping him, he is in a sense speaking the truth. She doesn’t acknowledge her lingering desires for Caleb, the feelings that sustain him within her heart and mind forever, try as she might to go on with her “normal” life with Jack. She doesn’t know herself. “No,” she protests. “I can’t let you hurt the people I care about like this again.” “It’s too late,” he warns. “There’s no stopping it now even if I wanted to, which I don’t. My energy is feeding off their ruin, getting stronger.” His voice becomes huskier, suffused with desire.
