“Congratulate me?”  Rafe asks.

“Don’t be modest,” Caleb chides.  “Dream-weaver extraordinaire.  Another one of your seemingly endless talents.”

“Bigger ones to come, Caleb” Rafe boasts.

“Yeah.  Still have a few tricks up your wings?” Caleb jokes.

“No tricks necessary.  It’s called the power of love,” Rafe says, reverting to another one of his treacly platitudes.

“Human love,” Caleb sighs. “An oxymoron if I ever heard one.”

“I find it funny the way you dismiss human emotion when we both know how important it is to you,” Rafe observes.

“I couldn’t care less about emotion,” Caleb retorts, adopting a blasé expression.
“You’re feeding off their pain, Caleb.”  Rafe sermonizes.  “I know that you’re getting stronger and they’re getting weaker.  But the thing is they really love each other.  They want to be together.  They’re not giving up hope that easy.  Even you should see that.  Especially now.”

“All this because of a couple stupid dreams?” Caleb remarks, raising his eyebrows in derisive disdain.

“Come on, man,” Rafe urges.  “Admit it.  Ain’t nobody here but us dead guys.”

“Admit what?” Caleb asks.

“You’re starting to get a little nervous,” Rafe replies.

Caleb purses his lips, betraying his unease, but quickly tries to assume a mask of arrogant composure. “Let’s clear one little thing up,” he says, resuming his scornful demeanor.    I ain’t afraid of anything, Halo Boy.”
“No?” Rafe questions, sensing his opponent’s discomfort.

“No, “ Caleb answers.  “And despite what you might think, your little dreamers will continue to self-destruct, and I’ll be at full strength before you can say ‘praise the Lord.’”  He stretches, flaunting confidence.

“You don’t believe that than any more than I do,” Rafe argues.

“Why wouldn’t I?” Caleb responds.

“Well, because if these people had fallen as far as you say, then you’d have gotten your fangs back by now, wouldn’t you?” Rafe points out.  “It must be nerve-racking to be so defenseless.”

“Oh, I assure you, I’m far from defenseless,” Caleb scoffs.

“We both know where a vampire gets his strength.  His real strength comes from blood, from feeding, and it’s been awhile for you, if I’m not mistaken,” Rafe notes with a rather condescending tone.

“Fasting is good for the soul,” Caleb smiles defiantly.

“Except you don’t have a soul,” Rafe reminds him.
