“Is there a point to any of this?” Caleb comments with an annoyed expression on his face.

“The point is that you can’t go on that much longer without feeding and your tiny little bicuspids won’t re-emerge until you’re strong enough to feed.   And I’m never going to let that happen,” Rafe warns.

“You’re not going to ‘let’ that happen?” Caleb challenges.

“I’ll just keep reminding my friends how much they love,” Rafe explains.

“You know, as I recall, the last time you and I went one-on-one you wound up dead,” Caleb sneers.

“So then, thanks to you, I’m pretty much indestructible, and you . . . well, you’re not much of a vampire,” Rafe responds in a mocking tone.

“You’re forgetting one little thing,” Caleb notes.  “These people are mortals.  And as much as they want to believe what you’re selling, they can’t.  That’s because they’re inherently suspicious and unforgiving.”

“That’s what you believe,” Rafe counters.

“That’s what made all this so easy,” Caleb smiles.  “All I did was plant a few seeds.  They did all the rest on their own.”

“You sure about that?” Rafe asks.

“I am,” Caleb replies confidently.

“Well, then, I’ll make you a deal,” Rafe suggests. “I’ll back off if you will.  We’ll just let them go their own way and see which way they go.  What do you say, Caleb? You ready to put those fangs on the line?”

Caleb looks wary, trying to appear unfazed but revealing a twinge of doubt.    “That’s an interesting proposition,” he remarks, hesitating perhaps to ponder his strategy.

As before, Rafe offers Caleb the chance to reconsider his options, to surrender control and stop his destructive course.

“So it’s a deal?” Rafe asks.

“Uh, I think I’m going to have to pass,” Caleb answers with a sarcastically dismissive tone.

“You are scared,” Rafe concludes.

“No,” Caleb swallows, his face and voice tense.   “You see, I play the game to the end.  There’s no quit in the middle.”

“Fine,” Rafe responds, starting to leave.  “You had your chance.”

“Oh, that’s right, run off,” Caleb snarls in the angry, frustrated tone of a child trying to get a reluctant playmate to finish a game.   “We both know you’re pretty much powerless.  You can’t even warn these people.”

“Maybe,” Rafe admits, walking away.  “But I can always remind them.”

As the episode concludes, Rafe’s dream magic has shown the Port Charles couples the way towards reconciliation.  Seeing the futures they crave deep within their hearts, the lovers begin communicating with each other again.  Ian calls Eve and arranges to meet her in the park.  Livvie and Jack discuss their enduring love and Jack agrees to let Livvie spend the night at his house so that she can feel safe.

The reminder of loving bonds is symbolized in some  photographs of Lucy with Kevin and Eve with Ian, which Caleb finds by the bridge after Rafe leaves.   “Hmm,” Caleb murmurs as he glances at the pictures and begins tearing them into pieces.  “That’s cute,” he says, addressing a vanished Rafe.  “Yeah.  But you’re going to have to do better than that.”  He smiles and licks his lips in anticipation.  “I’m going to hurt them in ways you wouldn’t believe.  I’m going after their children.” Focusing his vengeance on the one mortal gift denied him, the gift to create a newborn life, Caleb attacks his enemies where they are the most vulnerable, taking from them what he was never able to have for himself.
