When Jack, accompanied by Alison, returns to his room, he finds that Livvie has gone, leaving behind a farewell note that says she no longer wants anything from him. From overhead Caleb watches, a shadow looming, flapping bat-like wings and spreading discord wherever he goes.
As Caleb's "good girl," Livvie leaves Jack's bed to fulfill Caleb's plans. Assuming the role of "Christina," she calls Lucy on the phone, rekindling Lucy's obsession with finding her adopted daughter and thereby creating more conflict between Lucy and Kevin. Then, as herself, Livvie ruins Eve and Ian's happy reunion in the park by stealing Danny from his baby carriage. The parents are tormented through their children, and the sower of this misery, Caleb's beloved Livvie is, in the process, wounded even more than Caleb's most despised foes.
Caleb sacrifices Livvie to achieve his revenge. The destruction of Livvie's soul is a bitter, vengeful triumph that ultimately causes his defeat.
"Tempted" Episodes 37-39
By spreading strife amongst the couples, Caleb infects them with his own bitterness and disillusionment towards human emotions. Wounded to the core by his first Olivia’s rejection and destroyed in part by his second Olivia’s betrayal, Caleb attains vengeance by showing his enemies the fragility of their love and trust. He leads Rafe’s wayward flock into the path of temptation and watches as they fall into the abyss of hopelessness and futility. He wants them to experience the emotional torment he endured, to feel that inner, all-consuming hell gnawing away at his soul, slowly eroding his ideals and the remnants of his humanity.
Caleb snatches victory from the hands of his dream-weaving nemesis, tarnishing Rafe’s visions of everlasting love and contentment. Although their blissful reveries inspire the conflicted lovers to reunite, doubt and distrust soon dissolve their happy reunion. In fact, as Caleb continues to weave his poisonous web, his foes grow even further apart than they were before they had the happy dreams. Even Lucy’s self-professed “cosmic” connections and intuitions fail her when she, like all the rest of Caleb’s enemies, is fooled by Caleb’s illusions.
Overseeing the failure of his dream magic, Rafe realizes that the warm fires of love he rekindled within the lovers have turned to ashes, as ephemeral and fragile as the dreams themselves. He complains to his boss that even without fangs and sustenance, Caleb is gaining power. Just as Rafe is beginning to suspect that Caleb must have an accomplice, Livvie approaches.
She and Rafe stand on the bridge, the point of transition between two choices, two oppositions, heaven vs. hell, angelic bliss vs. vampiric ecstasy. As Livvie and Rafe talk, she confides that she doesn’t know how she got there, doesn’t even know what day it is. She worries that she may be going insane and begs Rafe not to tell anyone what she said for fear that she will be locked up in an institution. Rafe assures her that she is not crazy and that if she wants to remember she will.
However, just as Livvie is being swayed to dredge her memory, Caleb appears, battling with Rafe for control over Livvie’s soul. “She’ll remember when I let her remember,” he announces. “And not one heartbeat sooner.”
