| "Tempted" Episodes 41-42 (cont.) “Your long night’s over, Caleb Morley, “ Rafe proclaims. “Now, let the woman go and prepare to meet your unmaker.” “Ahhh,” Caleb sighs huskily. “You’re the slayer. You’re the one who’s been tracking me.” |

| As Rafe and Caleb battle, they re-enact the age-old Manichean war between opposing forces transcending time and morality. Light vs. darkness, order vs. chaos, these forces alternated in cyclical fluctuations millions of years before humans invented the concept of good and evil. Embodying these eternal contrasts and the ambiguities they encompass, Rafe and Caleb, eons later, wage their war on an earth long-soaked with blood and carnage.
“And the hunting is over,” Rafe proclaims boastfully, with self-important solemnity.. “Your final victim is going to get to live to see the dawn and tell her tale. But you have had your last sip, your final drink. Prepare to die.” With these words, Rafe jumps out of his hiding place, a wooden stake clenched tightly in his hands. “You’ve caused a lot of damage,” Rafe observes. “Have I?” Caleb asks with mock naivete. “But you’re all done with that now,” Rafe admonishes, baring his stake. “Confident little fellow, aren’t you?” Caleb taunts. “Any reason I shouldn’t be?” Rafe retorts. As the woman begs for help, Rafe rushes towards Caleb, but with a wave of Caleb’s hand, is hurled to the other end of the alleyway. “Concentration, Slayer,” Caleb chides him. “Keep your eyes on the fangs. Isn’t that what they teach you in wooden stake class?” “Sorry, Vampire,” Rafe responds, scrambling to his feet and grabbing a large beam. “I know you don’t like to get your claws dirty, but you can’t always get what you want in this world.” “How about the next world?” Caleb asks, confident of his earthly mastery. “Ha, ha.” Rafe smiles sanctimoniously. “There’ll be none of that for you.” “That’s why I’m staying in this one, for now and all time,” Caleb sneers, knocking the woman to the ground. “Your time’s up,” Rafe warns, trying to gouge Caleb with the beam. “You’re not the first. There were others,” Caleb says, ducking and grabbing a pole. “I’ll be the last,” Rafe vows, as the two lunge at each other with their weapons. “You ARE the last,” Caleb reminds him. “I killed all the others.” “I’ve watched you. I’ve taken my time. I know all your tricks,” Rafe boasts. “Really?” Caleb replies, as he continues to effortlessly dodge Rafe’s jabs. “Slayer, slayer,” he teases. Eventually, however, Rafe manages to land a blow. He kicks Caleb in the shoulder and sends him falling into a pile of boxes. “You’re going to pay for that, Slayer,” Caleb seethes, dusting himself off and advancing towards his insolent foe. “Kill him! Finish him now!” the woman shrieks in a voice filled with hatred and bloodlust as well as fear. “You hungry for death, you dirty Russian whore?” Caleb snarls, his mouth contorted in a sneer of disgust. |
