| "Desire" #1 (cont.) "Well, Caleb Morley. They tell me you've had your wings clipped," Chris mocks. "You know something? Not that I really care much whether you live or die, but, see, unfortunately, I took this oath so . . . " He pauses, noticing Caleb's longing glances at the bag of blood. "I don't want it to be like this," Caleb mutters, his voice filled with sadness and disgust. "Oh, that. Well, you see, your bloodsucking days are over," Chris gibes. "Now you're just an ordinary Joe like the rest of us." "I won't ever be ordinary," Caleb asserts. Though weakened, vulnerable, and human, Caleb proudly refuses to be "ordinary." He knows that even though he has been forced to be a mortal, he can never be ordinary. He will always be an artist, a rebel, an outsider. "What's he talking about?" Colleen asks. "Oh, you know, these rock stars," Chris says derisively, then, noticing that Caleb is pulling out his IV's , yells "Call Security!" "What do you think you're doing?" Chris scolds Caleb. "I have to get out of here," Caleb exclaims, struggling to get out of bed. "Hurry up, Security!" Chris shouts, as the security officers rush into the room, grapple with Caleb and restrain him so that Chris can inject him with a sedative. Caleb screams in impotent rage, anguish, and frustration, like an animal caught in a steel trap. It is a heart-rending, harrowing, feral shriek. As Caleb unwillingly sinks into slumber at the hospital, Livvie sleeps on the couch at Joshua's house, the lovers meeting in their dreams. In Livvie's dream, Caleb appears, sitting down beside her on the pillows at the Villa. He has on a drab beige shirt, a marked contrast to the black clothes he usually wears, perhaps symbolizing his transformation from a being of darkness into an "ordinary" human. "Don't cry, my love," he soothes. "I'm here." "They all left you for dead," Livvie exclaims, caressing his face. "I knew you survived." "I'll always find my way back to you," he assures her, touching her lips and hair. "I never gave up hope. I . . . I felt your presence in my heart and in my blood," Livvie says, expressing to her dream lover the enduring faith she nearly lost while awake. "They tried to kill me, but I had something more powerful than all their weapons," he snarls, contemptuous of all who try to conquer him. "Your love." |
