"No, no," he reassures her.  "But I don't blame you for thinking that."

"Oh, so you don't want me?" she fiercely accuses.

"I just know it's too late," he demurs, eyes downcast.  "That's why I didn't want to talk to you.  I didn't want to be dragging you back into my problems."

"Be together again?" she says hopefully.

"I don't want you back like this.  I want to deserve you," he vows.
"I don't want to be hurt again," she replies, reminding him, as well as herself, of all the pain he had caused.

"I was a fool," he exclaims, touching her softly.  "I see now what I had when I was with you.  You were good to me, Elizabeth.  You were good for me."

"I missed you," she murmurs with a tremble of longing.

"I missed you," he echoes, kissing her.  "I need you. . . . You're the only one.  You're the only one I can count on now, Elizabeth."

"Oh, I missed you," she moans, hungrily surrendering herself to his embrace.  "And someday you'll realize what you let go of.  But, God, this is so much better.  We can actually be together now as regular people."
"I wish that were true," he says, his ominous tone cutting into her like shards of ice.
