Caleb, meanwhile, has retreated outside with Alison.  “This is what you’re looking for?” he remarks, showing her
the charm.

“Oh, my charm! Where did you find it?” she, feigning innocence, exclaims.

“Well, a suspicious person might say ‘right where you left it,” he insinuates, “but a friend, he would just return it,
right?”  He then gives Alison the charm, placing it in her hand and folding her fingers over it.

Livvie, watching from the window, sees Caleb touch Alison’s hand.  Once again, Caleb is having a secret
interaction with Alison.  Even though he invited Livvie to attend the meeting, he has not included her in this
much more private, intimate rendezvous.  Her jealousy aroused, Livvie fears betrayal, rejection, abandonment.
The ring could make these fears disappear.  If only she could obtain access to the ring, perhaps she could be
guaranteed the eternity of passion and unconditional love Caleb had promised.
