| "The Gift" #34 (cont.) Pouring himself a blood-red drink, he breathes deeply. “What about you, Olivia?” he muses. “What are you thinking right now? I bet you’re ready to do just about anything.” |

| Livvie, meanwhile, refuses to let Caleb get away with so callously dismissing her. “It’s a test, right?” she ponders, rehashing her phone conversation with Caleb. “I mean, that’s what it has to be. It’s just a game, just like before. It’s why you’re ignoring me, Caleb, isn’t it? After I told you I was sorry and that I would do anything for you. I mean, ‘Who is it?’ You know damn well who it is. I will show you exactly who I am.” For now, though, Livvie has only Jack for company. When Jack, returning with the blood for her, puts it in the refrigerator, she prepares to get back at Caleb by using Jack. Assuming a seductive pose, she gazes at Jack, who stares at her with desire. “Wow, Livvie, you look . . . ” Jack hesitates. “Good enough to remind you of old times?” she asks in a sultry voice. “Jack, you really do give me everything I need. I mean, I couldn’t ask for a better friend. Are you sure there isn’t a way I can repay you? . . . You have been so good to me, Jack, taking me in,” she persists. “I mean, why won’t you let me thank you?” “OK, maybe we’re more friendly, maybe I kind of like you,” Jack concedes. “OK, and what?” Livvie demands. “Are you telling me you can’t remember any of the good times that we had?” “No, I’m not a guy who normally says no, but under these circumstances, we can’t,” Jack reiterates. “Yes, Jack, we can,” she murmurs. “I think we can.” Her lips meet his, their kiss momentarily erasing the barriers of time and past mistakes. As Livvie tries to forget her problems by renewing her relationship with Jack, Caleb seeks forgetfulness in his plans for a new band. The past is too painful, too burdened with the “stale,” unresolved conflicts of his love for Livvie. He tries to hate her, to deny her importance in his life, yet his bond with her, like the chain of consequences forged by the power of the ring, cannot be broken. |
