"Surrender" #1 (cont.)

Their passion spent, Caleb and Elizabeth lie beside each other, his back towards her.  The space between them grows; his desire turns cold.  A voice beckons, Livvie’s voice. Pale, ghostly, Livvie appears before him.  Like Cathy in
Wuthering Heights, she calls for her Heathcliff, her spirit forever restless without her feral animus.
“Caleb?  Can you hear me?  Look at me, Caleb.  Please look at me,” she pleads.  “I need you, Caleb.  I need you to find me.  If you ever loved me, I’m begging you.  I’m here.  Please find me.”

“Olivia,” he gasps, as her spirit vanishes, and his pursues.   Elizabeth wakes up to find Caleb gone, her husband having deserted her on her honeymoon.

Caleb appears at the docks, where Tess huddles, cold and frightened, humming a garbled version of “Naked Eyes.”

“You called me?” Caleb asks, as he takes the bedraggled survivor in his arms and strokes her hair, not realizing that the woman he holds is Tess, not Olivia.    “I heard you calling.  I tried to stay away, but I couldn’t.  I’m here.  I’m here now.  I’m so glad you’re safe.”

“You came here,” Tess says in a flat, monotone voice.

“I had to,” he exclaims.  “I don’t want to punish you anymore.  What’s the point when I’m the one who ends up in pain?”

“It must hurt so much,” she agrees.

“I married another woman to try to forget you,” he confides.  “And then out of nowhere there you were, asking for me, needing me.”

“We were so afraid,” she tells him, referring to herself as “we” because Livvie’s soul has been trapped inside her.  She, Tess, is now two, Tess the dominant personality,  Livvie  the suppressed.

“You never have to be afraid again,” he vows.  “You and I, Olivia, together.  Nothing can hurt us.”

“But I’m Tess,” she replies.

“Tess,” he snarls, his voice suddenly fierce, his expression accusing.  “Where is she?  Where’s Olivia?”

“She’s safe with me,” Tess says softly yet firmly.
“You’re one again,” he notes, examining her more closely.  “There’s only one of you, isn’t there?”

“She’s safe,” Tess repeats.  “I’m not going to let you hurt her.”

“I don’t want to hurt her.  I love her,” he explains.

“Uh uh,” she replies, shaking her head.  “No.  It’s not good for you to love her, Stephen.”
