"Surrender" #4 (cont.) She, knowing who he is, what he is, embraced him, merging, shadow and light, mystery and purity, amidst the fluttering veils. “Crave this life,” he had told her on their wedding day, asking her again if she was ready to be one with him, and she had said “yes,” giving to him her newly awakened soul. With Jack, she had been like Tess, a sleeping-beauty princess, dormant, hesitant to bud, but with Caleb, she had flowered, bursting with sensuality and passion.

“You remember now, don’t you?” Caleb asks, returning to Tess. He sprawls out on the couch, legs outstretched and slightly apart, confident in his dominance. “This is where we were first together, and before the night is through, it’s where we will be together again. Come to me,” he murmurs, reaching towards her. “We’ve waited too long for this. Welcome back, Olivia.” Softly, he touches her face, their lips meeting in a slow, lingering kiss.

He savors the taste of her mouth, sensing Olivia’s passion simmering within Tess’s chaste prison. “I can’t tell you how it feels having you back here,” he sighs. The kiss seems to have affected Tess almost as intensely as it did Caleb despite her efforts to keep Livvie’s passion safely locked inside. “You didn’t have to do this,” she says softly, amazement and awe tinged with suppressed desire. “Do what?” he asks, feigning innocence. “Go to all this trouble just to bring me here. You’re an amazing man,” she whispers. “So gentle and loving.” She is surprised that the man she tried to keep away from Livvie can be so tender and expressive. She, like Livvie, is entranced and enticed by him.
