The following episode evocatively develops the romance between Caleb and Livvie, juxtaposing the magical beauty
of Caleb's lair with Jack's and Gabby's attempts to understand the wild, carnal impulses Caleb has unleashed inside
them.
Arguing with Gabby over their future together, Joe gets ready to leave but Gabby orders him to stay and make
love to her. After having sex, Joe experiences a warm, loving afterglow; however, Gabby is distant, detached,
restless, her mind clearly elsewhere. "This isn't enough," she finally admits to Joe and says that she has met
someone else.
"Why did you make love to me?" Joe asks. "You weren't thinking of him then . . . or were you?"
When Gabby cannot answer, Joe walks out the door, resolved to end their relationship. Although Gabby doesn't
even know the name of her mystery lover, she cannot get him out of her head, cannot stop thinking of him and
desiring his caress. He is a stinging, tantalizing vision forever in her thoughts, a lover so beautiful and sublime that
she can never be satisfied by any other. She can use other men's bodies for her satisfaction, but in her heart it will
always be Caleb that she is embracing.
While Gabby consoles herself with memories of her first meeting with Caleb--the steely yet lurid intensity of his
gaze, the soft, deep resonance of his voice--Caleb's true love, Livvie, tries to resist the sensual seductiveness of
his physical presence.
Taking her to his cave, Caleb tells her, "You're home, Olivia. This place is where nothing else matters but you and
me. You belong here. It's where dreams come true. I'll take care of all your needs. All your desires. I want you
to be happy, Olivia. And I want you to be mine." They sit together on his luxurious bed of rich satin pillows,
bathed in the warm, reddish candlelight, he in black leather, she in a sheer, flowing red dress.
"I've looked for you in every crowd. In every woman's face. But none of them were right. Because none of
them were you." He settles behind her, lying on the bed. "There's nothing that we can't do together," he
murmurs. "Whatever . . ." he draws out the word as he envelops her with a black silk scarf "you might want, I
can give to you." Draping the scarf around her shoulders, he lightly lets his fingers touch her breasts, an air
caress, as gentle, seductive and arousing as his soothing voice and luminous eyes. He lounges beside her, with
the lithe, liquid grace of a panther.
Livvie sits there on his bed, gazing at him with a dreamlike expression of awe, wonder, and longing. "You mean,
you want me to stay?" she says hesitantly.
"I'd never force you to stay," Caleb explains. "I want you to choose to stay. I want you to think of me as your
protector. I want to be as vital to you as the air you breathe. You will feel all these things. I can already see it in
your eyes."
"I don't think I should be here," she says, still hesitant, unsure. "Jack wouldn't . . .he just wouldn't . . ."
Covering her shoulders again with the scarf, Caleb lies down beside her as she sits there, trying to figure out what
she is going to do about this intoxicating stranger who seems so familiar and reassuring yet mysterious.
"You've never felt this way before, have you?" Caleb asks. "You're burning up." He lightly touches her
forehead. "I guess you've never felt this kind of desire . . .where every touch is like coming home. Don't . . .
Don't be afraid of it."
