"I'll die first," Jack exclaims. "Oh, that's the thing, Jack," Caleb confides. "You can't. You'll just be miserable, Jack. Till the hunger overwhelms you. Then you'll just have to satisfy it. With whoever happens to be around." "You mean—kill," Jack emphasizes. "I prefer harvesting," Caleb says with a smile. "Call it as you like. But when you do kill—and trust me, you will—you and I will be the same. You see, you can't truly become a vampire, Jack, until you've made your first kill. In my world it's what separates the men from the boys." "You're crazy," Jack again says, relying on his stubborn denial to avoid facing up to Caleb's calmly stated truth. "Now if I were just your run-of-the-mill crazy person, could I do this?" Caleb asks, as he suddenly vanishes. While Jack wanders around in a daze, looking for Caleb, Alison appears and asks what Jack is doing. Livvie then awakens from her temporary unconsciousness, and Jack tells Alison to get Livvie away from there, away from him. After Livvie very reluctantly agrees to leave, Jack addresses the still-invisible Caleb. "I know you're still here. What do you want from me?" he yells. "It's simple really," Caleb says, once again appearing before Jack. Caleb's hands are in a praying position, close to his mouth as he talks. "I want you to join me." He opens his arms out, warmly, welcomingly, as Jack grimaces. "No," Jack scowls. "There's no way I'm joining your sick little club." "You're halfway there already," Caleb explains. "I've always wanted to have a protégé. You know, someone to hang out with." "Too bad," Jack complains. "Because I'm not going to be like you." "We're so misunderstood," Caleb smiles in rather sad amusement, then shakes his head. "But make no mistake, Jack. What I am . . . what you could be . . . It's awesome. The power, the intensity and strength. Man, you can have everything you want." As Caleb looks at Jack, it is clear that Caleb truly wants to win Jack over, convince Jack to accept the gift being offered, and with it, Caleb's dominating friendship. "All I want is Livvie," Jack pouts. "Except Olivia. She's mine," Caleb says softly yet firmly. "Livvie will never be yours," Jack scoffs. "You can't stop me, Jack," Caleb replies, still trying to rely on persuasion rather than threats. "We'll see about that, won't we?" Jack hisses. "Why can't we just get along?" Caleb smiles sweetly. Then his voice and expression change as he issues a gentle ultimatum. "You don't want this to get ugly, Kid. You can either forget Olivia and join me . . . Or you'll die." "I went over a cliff and I didn't die," Jack argues belligerently. "You can't kill me." "I made you what you are," Caleb says, his voice now chilly and stern. "And I can destroy you just as easily." He snarls. "You made your choice." |
