Jack, meanwhile, is begging Jamal to kill him once they know Livvie is safe and they've "sent Count Dracula back to Hell," but Jamal, being the loyal, trusting friend, refuses. Trying to explain the all-consuming agony of his addiction, Jack tells Jamal that he craves blood "so bad it hurts. " I wake up every morning thinking of it," he laments, " and go to sleep every night thinking about it. . . how to feed. How to make the pain go away. This thing is controlling my life." When Jamal attempts to downplay the horrors of Jack's condition, Jack yells, "I'm turning into a vampire. Remember, Jamal? Killing people . . . liquid diet. . . blood. . ." He then emphasizes the desperateness of his plight by saying that he has even been thinking of feeding on Jamal. As the two young men attempt to find a way to destroy Caleb, Jamal reminds Jack that they need to discover Caleb's protective talisman, and in an ironic statement (given the future of Jack's relationship with Livvie), they consider Livvie Jack's "lucky charm." Both agree that for the time being Jack needs to have more blood so that he can regain his strength and perhaps be able to defeat Caleb. While Jack and Gabby struggle with their blood cravings, Caleb nonchalantly lies on his bed of silk pillows as Livvie arrives at the cave. "You were expecting me?" she asks. "How did you even know I was coming here?" "I know you, every beat of your heart," Caleb tells her. "I . . . I kept thinking about you tonight. I found myself coming here--I don't even know why," Livvie starts to explain. "I think you do," Caleb whispers, looking into her eyes. Throughout this scene he anticipates all of Livvie's remarks, finishing her sentences, subtlely getting her to reexamine her feelings about him and Jack. "Everybody's warning me to stay away from you," she says. "Yet here you are," he responds, looking her up and down, giving her a coy smirk and licking his lips. "What does that tell you, Olivia?" When Livvie answers that she doesn't know, Caleb slowly, slinkily gets up from the bed, slithering in his tight black leather pants, and stands before her, once again gazing up and down her body. He touches her arm. "Do you know why your heart's racing?" he asks. "You're here. For one undeniable reason. You want me . . . as much as I want you." Trying to resist him with her words as her body yields pleasurably to his touch, she feigns shock. "Look Caleb," she protests, "I'm not here because I want you." "You're not?" Caleb asks. "No, I'm in love with Jack," Livvie again insists. "We are . . .we are very happy together." "Are you?" Caleb challenges. She walks away, talking without looking at him. "I'm here because a woman I know, a nurse at the hospital, told me about a man she met. And it sounds like she was in love with him." |
