Episode 5, like the first one, powerfully evokes the feral, animal aspects of Caleb. For example, when Ian and Eve are in the car after having just witnessed the destruction by Caleb of Father Michael's
church, they discuss the impending birth of their child. Eve mentions the possibility of having twins and then shudders, thinking of the "twins" (Caleb and Michael) and what Caleb did to the church.  After Ian belittles Eve's concern by calling the church desecration a matter of mere "family disagreements," Eve responds, "That's not a family disagreement. That's pure evil." At this moment, there is a very effective glimpse of Caleb in the woods. The white gleam of the moon or a distant headlight illuminates Caleb in a pale, ghostly gleam as he slinks through the woods. He looks furtive, nervous, perhaps hungry. Shortly afterwards, Eve and Ian see a flash of something black brush by their car. Startled and frightened, they stop the car and examine their surroundings. They wonder what it was, and Eve remarks, "I couldn't even tell if was human or animal." As they leave, Caleb, still with a haunted, hungry expression, steps out from the bushes. Later in the episode, Caleb, lurking in the bushes, watches Livvie as she sits by Jack's grave, writing Jack's name in the sand, the white moonlight illuminating the white sand and Caleb's captivated gaze. He stares at her, his face a jumble of inchoate emotions. Wonderment? Bewilderment? An apprehension of karmically-imperilling love? Does he see his own doom as well as that of his former Olivia?

Episode 6 of Tainted Love gives the first hint of Caleb's pain and loneliness.  As Caleb stares at Livvie by the river towards the end of episode 5, his face haunted, awe-struck, we see a glimpse of his
wounded heart.   It is as if he is stricken mute at the sight of Livvie; he cannot say a word in response to her questions "Who are you?  What do you want?"   After she leaves, he notices her handkerchief lying on the ground.  Gliding gracefully, in a reverie, he slowly approaches the handkerchief, his motions as fluid and
spellbound as a performer in a sacred rite.  Lightly picking up the handkerchief, he sniffs and fondles it, and as he does so, we see visions of him dancing with a woman--is it a memory of his former
love Olivia or a premonition of his dance with this Olivia?  His eyes are filled with longing, sadness, maybe even apprehension as he wonders if this is indeed his Olivia reborn and if he will really be given a second chance for happiness.

The next scene of Caleb he is at the window of the house where Livvie is staying, plaintively looking in at her, a Heathcliff seeking his Cathy; only this time it is he, Heathcliff, that scratches at the
window with longing.  As he gazes at her, breathing heavily and
clawing at the glass, he whispers that this is a "second chance"
and "this time I'll be patient."  But as his desperately clawing
fingers and panting breaths suggest, his yearning is so strong he can barely control his impatience to make her his this time forever.
