In the next episode Caleb is still battling his inner priest while Eve and Ian celebrate their future life together and
Jack devises a hasty plan to protect Livvie.
Caleb lies on his bed of silk pillows, leisurely savoring a glass of wine, when Michael suddenly appears,
interrupting Caleb's pleasant reverie. Caleb, illuminated by the reddish light of the candles, is confronted by his
"brother," illuminated in blue, as these two aspects of Caleb's personality, the hellish, fiery, passionate vampire side
(represented by the color red) and the spiritual, restrained, monkish side (represented by the color blue) struggle to
win Caleb's soul.
"What have you done now?" Michael asks in a reprimanding tone.
"You know, having a twin is starting to become a real drag," Caleb replies. "But I'm not going to let you spoil my
good mood with another one of your pious lectures." He goes on to gloat about the success of his plans. "Did I
happen to mention who showed up at my little party, Bro?" he smirks. "Olivia. All that praying you're doing ain't
doing no good."
"I can bet she didn't come willingly," Michael argues, claiming that Caleb manipulated her into visiting him at the
cave.
"So what?" Caleb scoffs and pours more wine. "Everybody plays games when they're first falling in love.
Eventually she'll come out of her own free will."
Ignoring Michael's remark that "pretty soon Livvie won't know what free will is," Caleb starts taunting Michael
with plans for the upcoming wedding. "What do you think of a late summer wedding? Something
simple, tasteful." Counting with his fingers, he adds, "Then shortly after, Eve's baby will be born. It will be a
perfect start to my new family."
"We're destined to be alone. You know that," Michael solemnly reminds him.
"That's your destiny, Bro," Caleb smiles. "We both know I'm no priest. . . . Why can't you just be happy for me,
Michael? I'm about to be a family man."
However, Michael, looking stern and disapprovingly, replies, "What you're describing, it isn't a family, Caleb. It's a
nightmare, turning a young woman into a monster like yourself, stealing a couple's newborn."
"I never did think the Commandments were all they were cracked up to be," Caleb says, looking bored and settling
back down onto his bed of pillows.
"It's sick, even for you," Michael persists in a reproachful tone.
"More comments like that and you're not sitting at the head table, " Caleb jokes, sipping more wine.
"I was at your last wedding, remember?" Michael reminds Caleb, his voice harsh and punitive.
Caleb looks down, puts aside his glass of wine, and becomes uneasy, defensive. "It doesn't count," he says
quietly. "The bride never showed up."
"Never showed up, Caleb? You killed her."
"It was an accident," Caleb protests. "You know. I lost control. I was impatient. But I am older and wiser now. "
"Don't you see? You're just setting yourself up for more pain," Michael says gently. He kneels down in front of
Caleb, like a priest would towards a lost, troubled member of his flock that he was trying to comfort and guide.
"You were doing good . . . Before you saw this girl. You had found some peace."
