As Eve shuts the door, she cannot escape his sinister presence.  "What is it about him? " she asks herself.  "And why do I get the feeling . . . " Holding her stomach and apprehensively venturing into the hall, Eve suddenly finds herself face to face with Caleb again; this time he is blocking the entrance to her apartment, not allowing her to pass by him.

"It would seem that you're as curious about me as I am about you," he observes.

"I was just making sure that you were gone.  Unfortunately, you're not," she growls.

"Oh, give me a chance here," he says, standing in front of her, preventing her escape, his voice still friendly but tinged with deceit.  "I'm sure if you guys get to know me, you'd find I'm not the monster my brother makes me out to be.  I'm just--how do you say it--misunderstood."

"Well, I'm not.  And I'd like you to leave," she replies coldly.

"Just a regular guy with a lot of great qualities. Kids, for instance," he pauses.  "I just love 'em."  His voice slithers with evil connotations, making Eve squirm with loathing and horror.

"I know all about you," Eve says, trying to act composed and in control of her emotions.  "I know you desecrated the monastery.  And
I've seen what you've done to Michael."

Caleb licks his lips and seems condescendingly amused by her anger.
"I'm not afraid of you," she warns and tries to get past him, but he blocks her way and grabs at her.

"Let go of me," she yells.  As she bravely confronts him, blazing with anger and maternal ferocity, he sees a glimpse of Michael's medallion and looks frightened, backing away.

"What's wrong with you?" Eve snarls.

"Where did you get that necklace?" Caleb asks, shaken, his confidence suddenly shattered.
"None of your business," she snaps.

"My brother gave it to you, didn't he?"  He sighs, defeated.  "Give Michael my compliments.  I'm sorry if I upset you," he says quietly.  "I'll go now."

As Eve clutches her talisman and closes the door, Caleb lingers outside the doorway.  "So you gave her the family crest to protect her," he mutters to himself, licking his lips pensively.  "Well, I'll figure a way."

Shortly afterward, Eve hears a knock, and seeing Michael at the door, lets him in.  His collar torn, his face bleeding, he staggers into the room and sits on the couch with Eve.

"Your brother did this to you, didn't he?" she asks tenderly, then tells him of her encounter with Caleb.   Reassuring a worried, protective Michael that Caleb did not hurt her, she tries to describe the ominous feelings he stirred within her.  "It was the way he looked at me, the way he looked at
the baby," she explains.  "Your brother really scared me.  He still scares me."

"It's OK," he murmurs, wrapping his arms around her and gently, soothingly, stroking her hair. "I'm here now.  I won't let him hurt you."  As they cuddle together, comforting, nurturing each other, Eve's jealous husband, Ian, enters the apartment, carrying a lavish bouquet of flowers.   Although Caleb, with his seductive, vampire persona, has not been able to worm his way into Eve's heart, he has, in his tender, priestly aspect, been able to make a connection with her that no one, especially her impetuous, possessive husband Ian, can understand.  Eve and Michael themselves are unable to fully comprehend the needs they fulfill in each other.  Although it is clear that Caleb is using Eve in order to obtain a baby for his family, he, in his Father Michael aspect, seems to genuinely love Eve.  His love for her threatens his priestly vows, but it also threatens Caleb's cold, calculated schemes.  Because the Father Michael part of Caleb does love Eve and vows to protect her, Caleb won't let himself succeed in his plans.   Even as he finds ways to eliminate his external obstacles, his inner doubts and self-conflicts undermine his chances for happiness.
