************************************* The wrenching account of Olivia's death, told in a series of black and white flashback sequences and excerpts from Caleb's journal, shows Caleb at his most tragic and vulnerable. He ranks amongst other classic fictional characters, such as Raskolnikov and Heathcliff, in his unforgettable, harrowing evocation of haunted, obsessive torment. As this episode begins, Caleb seems to be on the verge of fulfilling his greatest desire--to unite with his soulmate and make her his forever. He is kissing Livvie's neck, and she, fully aware of his vampire nature, is ready to surrender to his dark embrace. "Do it, Caleb," Livvie moans in rapturous anticipation. "I want to feel everything you described, everything you promised." "Feel what?" Caleb whispers, his lips nuzzling her neck. "You," Livvie murmurs. "Your fangs in my flesh. I want you to make me yours."

However, just as he opens his mouth and she eagerly awaits the feel of his fangs, he is stricken by a vision of the past and cannot bite her. In this vision, he is holding the limp body of his first Olivia, cradling her and crying out "Why?" as he is shaken by inconsolable grief.

"What's wrong?" Livvie inquires as she sees Caleb's anguished expression. "Nothing," he says softly. "Why did you stop?" she asks. "Why did you stop?" she asks.

"I want you so bad," Caleb tells her, caressing her throat and looking sad. "You must know this. But not like this." "Caleb, what to you mean?" "We have to wait," he explains. "No. I don't want to wait. The time is now," she protests, as he, panting with desire, pulls away from the embrace. "What are you waiting for, Caleb? I'm ready to step into that life you've shown me, experience what it feels like to have you drink from my blood."

"All in good time," Caleb says, breathing heavily. "I don't understand," Livvie persists, hurt and worried. "Why isn't now the right time? Are you having second thoughts about me? Did you change your mind?" No," Caleb assures her. "I want you more with every minute." "Oh. Then what is it? I'm right here." She sighs and closes her eyes, as if in a swoon of passion.

"There's something I need to tell you," he says. "Something important." "No. I don't need to hear it," she responds. "You do," Caleb insists. "For you to be truly mine, there can be no secrets between us, Olivia." "But you already told me what you were," Livvie cries. "There's more," he continues. "It's about the woman I loved before you." "What does she have to do with us?" Livvie's voice is hesitant, insecure. "She was so much like you," Caleb relates. "It was so easy to adore her, to want nothing more than to make her happy." "Was she pretty?" Livvie asks forlornly, no doubt jealous of her long- dead rival. "Not as pretty as you," Caleb smiles sadly. "But she had the same long, dark, beautiful hair. I remember brushing it till it shone like silk."
